Adobe Opens Firefly Music and Speech Tools
GWG Summary: Adobe has moved Generate Music and Generate Speech into live use inside the Firefly web app. Generate Music can build an original background track from instructions about genre, tempo, instrumentation, or mood. A creator can also upload a video and have Firefly analyze it before proposing music designed around the clip. Generate Speech converts a written script into a voiceover for projects such as explainers, social posts, prototypes, presentations, and portfolio videos. Adobe says both types of output are created under its content-licensing framework and are intended for commercial use. The company describes the generated music as royalty-free; its separate Premiere beta announcement says synchronization rights are included for uses such as advertising, film, television, and games. In Premiere Beta 27.0, editors can also create loops, choose tracks lasting from five seconds to five minutes, set a tempo, and receive four versions per generation. Each attempt consumes generative credits, so the feature is not cost-free for users with a limited balance. The release gives freelancers and solo creators an integrated alternative to sourcing stock music or arranging basic narration outside their existing Adobe workflow.

YouTube Changes How Public Views Are Counted
GWG Summary: YouTube will change its public view counter worldwide on August 24, 2026. A public view will register as soon as a video starts playing, bringing regular videos into line with the counting method YouTube already uses for Shorts. That means the visible view total may rise more quickly than creators are used to seeing, even when a viewer does not continue watching for long. The company will preserve its previous, more selective measure under the name Engaged views in the Advanced Mode section of YouTube Analytics. The change is limited to public-facing measurement and does not alter the signals used for creator pay or entry into the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube says revenue will still depend on Engaged Shorts views and Engaged Watch Hours, while YPP qualification will continue to use qualified Shorts views and qualified watch hours. Creators therefore should not treat a sudden lift in the public number as an equivalent lift in monetizable attention. The revised count can help describe total exposure, but engagement data remains the more useful comparison for retention, revenue forecasting, and content performance.

Twitch Adds Dual-Format Gift-Sub Bonus
GWG Summary: Twitch is temporarily adding one bonus community gift subscription for every five new gift subscriptions purchased on an eligible Dual Format stream. The promotion runs from August 20 at 10 a.m. Pacific through August 27 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Affiliates and Partners qualify automatically while broadcasting with Dual Format enabled, so there is no separate enrollment step. Twitch says viewers will see the offer in chat on the web or at the top of the mobile channel page when a stream is eligible. The bonus subscription matches the tier of the five purchased subscriptions, and Twitch may add occasional extra gift subscriptions during the event. The offer cannot be combined with sponsored-subscription discounts. Dual Format sends a horizontal and vertical version of the same live broadcast at once, allowing desktop viewers to receive the traditional landscape layout while mobile viewers get a native vertical presentation. Twitch provides setup instructions for OBS and Aitum, along with a separate help guide for other supported broadcasting software. Only purchases made during the stated promotional window count, making setup timing important for creators who want to participate.

IRS Adds Authenticated Tax Compliance Reports
GWG Summary: The IRS has added a digitally authenticated Tax Compliance Report to Individual Online Account, giving taxpayers an on-demand document they can download when an organization asks for proof of tax compliance. The agency says the report can be used in processes involving a job, loan, government benefit, or another service that requires compliance information. Each downloaded report includes an IRS-issued digital certificate, allowing a financial institution, government agency, client, or other recipient to validate that the document is genuine. The embedded verification is also intended to protect the integrity of the information when taxpayers share it. Access is available through the same individual online account taxpayers use for other federal tax records and services. This is different from sending an unauthenticated screenshot or assembling separate records for a reviewer: the receiving organization can check the certificate within the report itself. The IRS describes the format as standardized, with the same authentication and verification features included for each taxpayer. The release does not change filing deadlines, tax rates, or contractor reporting obligations; it adds a new way to retrieve and present official compliance evidence when a third party requires it.

X Replaces Creator Revenue Sharing Program
GWG Summary: X is ending its existing Creator Revenue Sharing program and moving creators to a new Original Content Rewards program. New enrollment in the old program stopped on August 7, and current members can keep earning under it only through September 7. X says the remaining scheduled payments are August 28 and a final payment around September 11 for earnings accumulated through the cutoff. Starting September 8, existing revenue-sharing members will gradually receive access to apply for the replacement program in Creator Studio. Approval is not automatic. Applicants must have an eligible personal or business account, an active Premium-tier subscription, at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over 90 days, 500 verified followers, and an active record of publishing original work. X says qualified impressions must come from Premium users viewing original content in the Home Timeline; reply impressions, paid views, repeat views, and artificial traffic do not count. Creators who already completed identity checks and connected a valid payment method will not need to repeat those steps. The new program keeps a $30 minimum payout and a two-week payment cycle, but X retains review and enforcement discretion.

Slack Opens Shared Channels for AI Coding Agents
GWG Summary: Slack has introduced Slack Code, a workspace feature that moves AI-assisted software work into temporary channels where developers, clients, and other teammates can follow a task together. VentureBeat reports that the launch works with Claude Code, Devin, GitHub Copilot, and the Vercel agent. A user can mention a connected agent from a conversation, after which Slack creates a project channel that shows the plan, code changes, previews, and discussion while the job is underway. The channel is archived when the task finishes, preserving a searchable record of what was requested and approved. Slack is also adding an Agents area for tracking sessions and stopping active work. The company says existing workspace permissions and security controls apply to these agent interactions. Slack Code is available on every Slack plan at launch, but users still need separate access to whichever coding agent they choose. That distinction matters for budgeting: Slack is supplying the collaboration layer, not the underlying model subscription. The feature can reduce the handoff gap between a technical freelancer and nontechnical stakeholders, but teams still need a clear review process before accepting generated changes.

Twitch Opens Sponsorships to Affiliates
GWG Summary: Twitch has expanded its built-in sponsorship program beyond Partners, giving Affiliates a direct route to brand campaigns inside the platform. The company says eligible Affiliates worldwide can now be invited by brands, manage campaign work through the Sponsorship Dashboard, and receive payment through the same workflow. Access is not automatic income: Affiliates must first accept the Sponsorship Portal terms and complete the free Creator Sponsorship Certification course. Campaign invitations still depend on the audience and other requirements set by each advertiser. Twitch says earlier Minecraft campaigns demonstrated advertiser interest in smaller channels, with Affiliates accounting for more than half of the paid streamers who participated. The platform is also adding offers supplied by creator-marketing company Wehype; an EA Battlefield campaign began appearing for qualifying creators this week. Affiliates can improve how they appear to advertisers by completing their Creator Profile and selecting clips that demonstrate past sponsored work. The change removes a meaningful platform barrier, but it does not create a public marketplace where every Affiliate can claim every campaign. Creators should complete the certification, update their profile, and treat notifications as leads that still require careful review of deliverables, timing, usage rights, and compensation.

Hostinger AI Builder Adds Backends and Ecommerce
GWG Summary: Hostinger has launched AI Builder worldwide for new and existing customers, expanding its site-building product beyond generating pages from prompts. According to TechRadar, the system combines AI-assisted creation and visual editing with backend infrastructure, ecommerce, embedded AI, and marketing tools. It can also start from existing materials such as a website link, screenshot, reference image, or PDF rather than requiring a blank project.
The practical shift is that Hostinger is trying to automate more of the work that comes after a homepage is designed. The platform can help establish authentication, data handling, user management, online-store functions, and customer-acquisition systems without sending users to separate services for every component. Hostinger says nearly one in five projects made on its platform are now software-as-a-service products, learning platforms, or internal tools, compared with fewer than 4% a year earlier.
The release is available globally, but the announcement does not establish how reliably it handles production requirements or unusual integrations. Freelancers should treat it as a faster prototyping and delivery option, not proof that testing, security review, accessibility, analytics, and client-specific customization can be skipped.

IRS Moves 2027 Information Returns to IRIS
GWG Summary: The IRS has announced that its older Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system will be retired for the 2027 filing season, when businesses submit tax-year 2026 information returns. The agency says the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS) will become the only electronic filing channel for returns that FIRE currently accepts. The change matters to independent professionals who operate as small agencies or hire subcontractors, because a freelancer can become a payer with separate reporting duties rather than only a recipient of Forms 1099.
The same IRS guidance says businesses filing 10 or more information returns in a calendar year must file electronically. It also reminds payers to collect Form W-9 from U.S. contractors and keep it for four years, and that incorrect or missing taxpayer identification information can trigger 24% backup withholding. The page does not provide a publication date, but it gives a concrete transition point: the 2027 filing season for tax-year 2026 returns. Freelancers who used FIRE for 1099-NEC or other information returns should plan to move their account, software, or filing workflow to IRIS before filing begins. This changes the submission system, not the underlying duty to report taxable contractor income.

Figma Lets Designers Build Reusable Agent Skills
GWG Summary: Figma now lets users create reusable instruction files for its design agent without leaving the canvas. A designer can point the agent at a frame or provide steps and guidelines, preview the markdown skill it drafts, test it in chat, and revise it through prompts or direct editing. The company says many of these skills can also run through Figma's MCP server in third-party agents, and it has published examples on GitHub.
These are more than canned image-generation prompts. A skill can encode a repeatable design method or quality check. Figma's examples include auditing components for duplicates and naming errors, documenting components for handoff, mapping colors to design tokens, expanding screens to cover error and loading states, reviewing interfaces, and generating usability-test discussion guides. Once created, the same workflow can be run again or shared with a team, turning a designer's process and standards into a reusable asset inside Figma.
The feature relies on the Figma design agent, which remains in open beta. Full-seat users on Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans can use the agent across their work, while Collab, Dev, and View seats can use it in drafts. The agent is free during the beta, so access or pricing could change later.

Google Pics Starts Rolling Out to Workspace Users
GWG Summary: Google Pics begins rolling out August 18 to organizations using eligible Google Workspace business and education plans. The new application generates images from text prompts and lets users adjust individual objects, replace elements, and edit or translate text inside an image. It can run as a separate web app, while Google also plans to place its editing tools inside Workspace products such as Slides. Access is included for Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Workspace AI Expanded Access, and Google AI Pro for Education accounts. Free consumer accounts and Business Starter are not part of this initial release. Google is enabling Pics by default for covered organizations, although administrators can turn it off. The company says the service operates under existing Workspace agreements and enterprise data protections. Generative features will have usage limits, but eligible users are due higher access through February 28, 2027; Google may apply tighter limits after that date. The rollout moves a capable image-production workflow into subscriptions many freelance teams and clients already use, reducing the need to move basic visual work between separate applications.

YouTube Raises Monetization Thresholds for New Creators
GWG Summary: YouTube is preparing a broad revision of its Partner Program that will make full ad and Premium monetization harder to reach for new channels. Beginning February 1, 2027, applicants will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified public watch hours during the previous year or 20 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days. Those viewing requirements are double the current full-monetization thresholds. Channels already in the program will keep their status, but Shorts income will gain a recurring performance test: a creator must maintain 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days to receive money from the Shorts Creator Pool each month. Missing that mark will pause Shorts pool earnings without removing the channel from YPP or affecting long-form revenue. YouTube is also expanding Premium Lite and says creators will share a pool equal to 60% of its net subscription revenue, while standard Premium will use a 30% pool. Targeted Shorts ads aimed at five or fewer channels will carry a direct 45% creator share. Monetized creators must review and accept the applicable updated modules in YouTube Studio by January 31, 2027 to avoid an interruption in associated earnings.

Upwork Client Count Falls as AI Work Grows
GWG Summary: Upwork reported that its marketplace contracted in the second quarter even as AI-related projects expanded. Gross services volume, the value of work transacted through the platform, fell 4% from a year earlier to $966.4 million. Revenue declined 2% to $191.7 million, while the number of active clients dropped 4% to 763,000. Spending per active client moved in the other direction, rising 5% to a record $5,230. The mix of work is also changing. Upwork said gross services volume from AI-related assignments increased more than 22% year over year, and AI strategy consulting grew by more than 50%. The company described lower-complexity work as continuing to move toward automation while demand develops for higher-value AI expertise and more involved projects. Upwork is responding by embedding its marketplace into AI workflows. It has launched connections for ChatGPT and Claude and introduced a Model Context Protocol server that lets clients and freelancers use compatible AI agents to search for talent or opportunities and assist with managing work. The results show a marketplace serving fewer clients and handling less total work than a year ago, but with growth concentrated in AI-linked specialties and larger spending among the clients who remain active.

YouTube Ends Paid Creator Music Licenses
GWG Summary: YouTube has removed the paid-license option from Creator Music, ending a route that let eligible creators pay upfront for selected songs and keep all video monetization. The cutoff was August 10, 2026. Creator Music will now concentrate on tracks offered at no cost and tracks whose rights holders require revenue sharing.
Paid licenses already attached to published videos remain valid until their stated expiration. YouTube says any paid license purchased but not used in a video by the cutoff will be refunded automatically. For new projects, creators will need to choose among the remaining no-cost and revenue-sharing catalog options, or obtain music rights elsewhere. Under revenue sharing, the video income is divided with music rights holders when the upload meets YouTube requirements.
Creator Music remains limited to members of the YouTube Partner Program in the United States, with wider availability still pending. The change affects the licensing choices inside YouTube Studio rather than previously licensed videos. Creators planning long-lived or high-earning videos should therefore review the usage terms and revenue split shown for each track before editing it into a project, since paying a predictable one-time Creator Music fee is no longer available.

Wise Changes Thailand Foreign-Currency Payments
GWG Summary: Wise has moved personal accounts registered in Thailand onto its locally regulated service and activated a new set of account rules. For customers who joined before January 21, 2026, the restrictions took effect August 3. Accounts can now send baht abroad, add money from Thai banks, use PromptPay and order Wise cards, but the treatment of foreign-currency earnings has changed materially.
Payments from clients or other third parties in currencies other than baht are now converted automatically into Thai baht before reaching the account balance, with conversion fees deducted. Sending a non-baht balance overseas also requires conversion into baht and then into the destination currency, potentially creating two conversion charges. Wise also applies a starting daily limit of 30,000 baht to payments and transfers from multi-currency balances, although it says that ceiling can rise with account use. Outward remittances from baht are capped at 800,000 baht per day, and Thai ATM withdrawals with the Wise card are unavailable.
The rules apply according to the registered account address. Wise tells customers who no longer live in Thailand to update their address, while existing Thailand users may need to provide additional verification documents.

Four Companies Now Dominate Paid AI Training-Data Work
GWG Summary: A new industry analysis from data-market research firm Pebblous finds that four companies now capture more than three-quarters of all revenue in the market for AI training data and reinforcement-learning environments, even though more than 50 vendors compete for that work. Scale AI, Surge AI, Mercor, and Handshake have each built large networks of paid experts, including doctors, lawyers, and PhD holders, who grade AI model outputs, write evaluation rubrics, and build task simulations used to train frontier AI systems. Handshake, once a college job-search site, now pulls in an estimated $1.1 billion a year from this work after building an expert network of roughly 500,000 people. Mercor, which started as an AI recruiting startup, saw its valuation jump roughly 40-fold in about a year, hitting $10 billion. The analysis also traces how concentration already caused real disruption once: when Meta bought a 49% stake in Scale AI in 2025, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft all pulled back their spending with Scale over data-neutrality concerns, and Scale responded by cutting 200 employees and 500 contractors. That volume mostly shifted to the other three firms rather than opening the market to new entrants. OpenAI is reportedly now building its own in-house data team specifically to reduce its dependence on these outside vendors.

Monday.com Cuts 20% of Workforce in AI Restructuring
GWG Summary: Work-management software company monday.com plans to eliminate about 20% of its global workforce, affecting roughly 620 employees, as it reorganizes around an AI-focused operating strategy. The company has about 3,000 employees worldwide, with approximately half based in Tel Aviv; around 350 of the affected jobs are expected to be there. The cuts follow months of internal restructuring and a move toward smaller, more autonomous teams. Company leaders said the plan is meant to reshape the organization for a workplace where people and AI agents operate together, while stressing that the decision was not simply a direct replacement of employees by software. A securities filing describes a leaner operating model alongside continued investment in AI-driven growth. Monday.com expects restructuring charges of roughly $45 million to $55 million, mainly for severance, benefits and office-space reductions. It also expects to keep hiring in selected strategic areas during 2026 and has maintained its forecast for annual revenue growth of 19% to 20%. The combination of sizable cuts and continued hiring suggests that AI adoption is changing which skills and roles the company prioritizes, not ending recruitment altogether.

Amazon Closes Mechanical Turk to New Customers
GWG Summary: Amazon has stopped accepting new customers for Mechanical Turk, its long-running marketplace for small online tasks, effective July 30. Existing requesters can continue using the service, and current workers can still complete available Human Intelligence Tasks. However, Amazon Web Services says it does not plan to add new features, while continuing security and availability work.
Mechanical Turk has connected businesses and researchers with remote workers for survey participation, content review, data validation, categorization, and AI training tasks since 2005. The cutoff does not immediately close worker accounts or remove current projects, but preventing new requesters from joining limits a key source of future task demand. It also signals that the platform is now being maintained rather than developed.
Researchers and companies that need new crowdsourcing capacity will have to use another provider or an existing requester account. Competing research and data platforms may gain projects as a result, but workers should not assume those tasks will move automatically or offer equivalent access. Current MTurk earners can keep working for now, while monitoring task volume and building profiles on other legitimate research or annotation platforms. TechCrunch reported the change after Amazon added the effective date and future-development plans to its AWS documentation.

Fiverr Buyer Count Falls as AI Pressure Grows
GWG Summary: Fiverr reported a sharper contraction in its freelance marketplace during the second quarter, saying rapid AI adoption is reducing demand and traffic for services that are easiest to automate. Annual active buyers fell to 2.7 million as of June 30, down 21.9% from 3.4 million a year earlier. Marketplace revenue declined 15.5% to $63.1 million, while total revenue dropped 10% to $97.8 million.\n\nThe platform is responding by moving away from high-volume, low-cost transactions and concentrating on longer, more complex assignments where clients still need human expertise, oversight and accountability. Fiverr said the number of clients completing projects worth at least $1,000 increased 13% over the trailing 12 months. Annual spending per buyer also rose 15.6% to $368, suggesting the remaining customer base is purchasing larger engagements even as fewer people buy on the platform.\n\nFiverr lowered its full-year outlook and now expects 2026 revenue of $356 million to $372 million. It also deployed a proprietary Knowledge Graph intended to improve matching and outcomes for higher-value projects. The figures show a marketplace becoming smaller and more selective as AI takes over some entry-level digital tasks.
Patreon · July 23, 2026
Patreon Cuts 20% of Staff
GWG Summary: Patreon is reducing its workforce by 20%, eliminating 93 positions as it lowers costs and reorganizes around a smaller, flatter team. CEO and co-founder Jack Conte said the creator platform’s core business remains healthy, with more than 300,000 creators earning money through Patreon and creator earnings continuing to grow. He also said the company is not changing its product roadmap or its priorities around improving creator and fan experiences and helping creators build their audiences.\n\nThe announcement draws a careful distinction around artificial intelligence. Conte said Patreon did not make the cuts because it believes AI can replace people, arguing that the technology cannot substitute for human creativity, judgment, craftsmanship or connection. At the same time, he acknowledged that AI has changed how technology companies build products, communicate and organize their work, and said Patreon needs to adapt more quickly to that shift.\n\nPatreon plans to flatten management, concentrate teams on its main priorities and adjust its cost structure while its expansion into a broader media and community network develops. Departing employees will receive at least 16 weeks of pay, additional pay based on tenure and healthcare coverage through the end of 2026.
